Emily and Anne Brontë were born in 1818 and 1820 respectively. Much has been written by and about these sisters and much has been destroyed.
An archive can call forth the passing on and receiving of stories between generations. This book brings together fragments gathered, from diary papers, poetry and records, to speculate upon the past. History is like an undercurrent: not separate from us, but running alongside, seeping into our lives.
In creating this journal of sorts, I reflect on myself in parallel with the Brontës, connecting us across time and space. Growing up, they found relief in escaping into their imaginations together, creating the magical world of Gondal. As they got older, the differences between the sisters’ outlook on life became more obvious. I see myself in Emily’s stubbornness and creativity; I see myself in Anne’s curiosity and contemplation- and all these parts of myself are woven so tightly together.
This is an archive of everything that slips under the surface. A collection of memories and feelings, both real and imagined. A documentation of connection.
